Great service for monitoring

Used Daily for 2+ years
Reviewed on 1/30/2018
Review Source: Capterra

Pros

Datadog provides a way of having a lot of information about your systems, clusters and infrastructure in only one site, being able to analyze valuable data for your company. It is possible to create alarms and notifications when overpassing some threshold or value, for example, when a service is down in your systems of when the CPU gets a high percentage of usage.

It integrates pretty well with tons of services and systems, such as Amazon Web Services, Apache, Nginx, several databases, and a long etcetera. Also, it is possible to send notifications to apps like Slack or Hipchat.

Cons

Datadog is not very easy to use at the beginning and it needs a little bit of investigation but it is worth to learn it.

Datadog has great support for a variety of different third party systems - Windows machines, linux machines, AWS instances, pretty much anything you can imagine. You can easily slice and dice stats on a good looking dashboard. Provides a good one stop view of your environment.

Pros

Datadog's Windows support is great, the Windows agent supports detailed IIS and MSSQL statistics. Their RabbitMQ support is good as well - providing good insight into queues. Customizable dashboards are very handy as well.

Cons

The User interface generally is good but in some instances can be a bit too technical to use.

Datadog Cloud Monitoring Review

Used Weekly for 1+ year
Reviewed on 10/12/2017
Review Source: Capterra

Pros

I noticed that this monitoring system is very flexible, you can track pretty much any metric, which is great.

Great integration with many services like AWS, Chef, Couchbase, JVM, HAProxy, MySQL etc.

Dashboard functionality is easy. Comes with UI, UI is simply designed but supports all the key functionalities that you would expect from a counter services, and to be able to create dashboard based on counters.

Cons

Noticed that the more data you have, the slower response Datadog service will become, when you query the service.

Query a specific counter, as well as when the counter contains high dimensional data, which is normal, we haven't yet tested what is the upper limit for how much data it can decently handle.

But we have been very satisfied using Datadog, and we feel that it should be enough for small to mid size company.

GetApp Analysis

It’s not uncommon for IT, operations, and development teams that write and run applications at scale to end up with significant amounts of data. However, understanding what to do with all the data that’s produced by apps, tools, and other web-services isn’t always an easy task. Datadog is a solution that professionals can use to quickly turn the data being gathered by cloud-based apps and tools into actionable business insights.

Designed for IT, operations, and development teams of all sizes, Datadog is used by technology businesses including Intel, Adobe, Salesforce, Zendesk, and Spotify. Other well-known clients include Stanford University, Hearst Magazines, and the MLS soccer league.

Part of the reason why so many large organizations have started using Datadog is because the company offers a way to collect and analyze the data being generated by apps, tools, and other web-services that businesses are managing on-premises. Datadog is best known for its real-time interactive dashboards and correlation tools, which overlay metrics and events across seemingly-unrelated sources and enable users to hone in on specific code changes that are necessary to configure updates and schedule jobs.

What is Datadog?

Datadog is a web-based tool that provides its users with a way to turn the data being generated by apps, tools, and other online services into real world insight. System metrics, changes, alerts, and events from across an organization’s infrastructure are brought together in Datadog, where development and operations teams can parse key data points and collaborate to find the solutions to ongoing challenges.

Organizations benefit when they use a platform like Datadog, because the solution brings together metrics and events from disparate sources. For example, IT professionals may sign up to receive instant notifications when performance problems are affecting their companies’ apps, while development teams may use Datadog for highly elastic cloud deployments. Bringing these metrics together into a centralized platform gives organizations a more straightforward way to stay in control of the increasing amounts of data being generated by mobile apps, servers, tools, and other web-services.

Datadog Main Features

Bringing IT data sources together.

Datadog brings multiple data sources together within the platform’s news feed. Scroll through the news feed for minute-by-minute updates of the events occurring on your apps, servers, tools, and other web-services. Within the news feed, you may see source code commit from Github, system alerts from MySQL, and user alerts from Pingdom, to name just a few of the services that Datadog supports.

When you install Datadog’s agent and cloud integrations, you’re able to bring metrics and events from your cloud services into a centralized place. You can also drill down to see more details about any single event by clicking on that event. You can start a conversation with your team to discuss what may be causing a specific event or trigger to occur. Datadog also notifies you of performance problems, whether they affect a single host or a massive cluster. Datadog alerts can be used to identify dips, spikes, or unhealthy trends in your metrics. For instance, you might alert on memory rapidly running out, or a dramatic drop in requested work. Alerts are built to automatically notify individuals or teams via the communication tools you already use, such as PagerDuty or Slack.

Bringing IT Data Sources Together

Graphing metrics and events.

In addition to collecting data from integrated applications, Datadog also provides its users with tools for manipulating and graphing the metrics and events it tags. Generate graphs that include real-time data from multiple sources, which may include popular web services like Airbrake, RSS, and HipChat.

Datadog allows you to organize data by host, device, or tag, and the solution automatically computes the rates, ratios, averages, and integrals so you don’t have to manage the calculations on your own. All graphs are “in sync,” and you can zoom in to focus on specific points of interest. Advanced users may be interested in customizing their graph views, as well.

Host Maps

The above screenshot is an example of Datadog’s Host Maps feature. Host Maps let you see all of your hosts together on one screen, grouped however you want, filtered however you want, with metrics made instantly comprehensible via color and shape. This is a simple way to spot outliers, detect usage patterns, avoid resource problems, and make decisions about how to best manage your infrastructure. Host Maps work at any scale, whether you have 10, 100 or 10,000 hosts. Host Maps also help with resource optimization, availability zone replacement, and problem investigation.

Sharing analytics with the whole team.

In the process of pulling together graphs and correlating metrics and events, it’s not uncommon for users to notice specific issues or triggers that they’d like to address with their teams. The manual process of sharing this information—usually by copy/pasting images and emailing those files to colleagues—is time consuming and not necessarily productive. Datadog has developed its own method for sharing analytics.

Quickly share insights with your team without wasting time or losing context. When you see an important data point on a graph that you’d like to bring to the attention of your colleagues, take a picture, add the details, and press submit. The snapshot you’ve taken, along with the context you’ve provided, will appear in the news feed for every member of your team. Colleagues will then have ample room in Datadog to discuss the issue that you’ve brought up.

Sharing Analytics

Search and Correlate Metrics

Datadog supports full-text structured search over all the event data it integrates with, allowing you to search and correlate metrics and events. With Datadog you can overlay metrics and events across disparate sources; see who did what, in context; zero-in on the right code changes, relevant config updates or scheduled jobs; and correlate the metrics and events to find the root cause.

Search and Correlate Metrics

Datadog Integrations

Datadog works with many of the cloud-based tools and services that organizations are already using. The solution integrates with more than 50 services, the most popular of which include Amazon Web Services, Elasticsearch, Github, Hadoop, Java, Nodejs, and Pingdom.

Datadog is continuing to add to the list of tools and services it supports, and the company encourages its users to recommend which new integrations they’d like to see added to the system.

Datadog Pricing

Datadog offers three levels of pricing, beginning with a free plan for organizations with up to five hosts. The standard plan ($15 per host, per month), allows up to 100 hosts. Organizations with more than 100+ hosts are encouraged to select the Enterprise plan, which comes with custom pricing. All Datadog plans include custom metrics and events.
